ActionSA’s Cape Town mayoral candidate, Dereleen James, has joined the voters’ queue at the NG Kerk along Townsend Street in Goodwood.
The MP was previously a community activist and ran her own organisation in Eldorado Park, Johannesburg, helping at-risk youth.
Even today, much of her activism focuses on child safety, particularly rescuing children from homes where drug abuse is rife.
Just this week, MP Dereleen James visited premises in Tafelsig, Mitchells Plain, which residents had apparently identified as a drug house.
Five children between the ages of one and 13 were found inside.
Making her mark in Goodwood on Wednesday, James said she’s ready to become Cape Town’s new mayor.
"This election is more important than ever before. This could possibly be a turning point for the residents of Cape Town. I am so ready to serve the residents, that is, if the residents are ready to have me as their leader."
For years on end, the city has been marginalised. James said the city has amazing services, but only for a select few.
"As the mayor of the city, I will ensure that those services reach all communities across the city."
