The vote counting in the Buffalo City metro has all but concluded, but not without a possible coin toss to determine the winner in one of the highly contested wards.

The IEC said the coin toss would decide the winner of ward 15 between the DA and EFF candidates after both parties received exactly 1,714 votes each.

But the ANC remains the dominant party in the Eastern Cape metro, without a clear majority, with 42% of the vote.

The IEC had earlier issued an alert for a coin toss to determine the winner of the ward but will now consider a recount of the vote.

The ward in question covers the Nompumelelo township and the suburb of Abbotsford.

The ANC in the province said that while it has lost ground in the metro and parts of the province, this is a sign of a maturing democracy.

ANC provincial leader Oscar Mabuyane said they expected to do better in the metro, but they’re willing to work with other parties.

"Parties in the metro are now expected to get into talks to decide on any possible coalitions with the DA federal executive, to meet tomorrow morning to discuss any future coalition."
