The African National Congress (ANC) in KwaZulu-Natal said it will accept whatever election result it gets, as it represents the will of the people.
KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) is one of the ANC’s historic strongholds.
However, the party’s dominance in the province is facing stiff competition from the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party.
With 18% of the vote counted, the MK Party is leading the province in the number of seats and popular support.
Speaking at the Electoral Commission of South Africa's (IEC) Results Operations Centre in Durban, ANC provincial convenor Mike Mabuyakhulu said it was still too early to draw any conclusions from the results.
"This is an election, and in an election, what we do as political parties is we campaign and once we campaign, we leave it to the judges who are the voters," Mabuyakhulu said. "And once the voters have spoken, they have spoken. I think democracy actually means whatever you actually get that comes out of a democratic process. If you are a party that contests an election, you should stand ready to receive and welcome an outcome."
