The African National Congress (ANC) said it welcomes the Electoral Court ruling dismissing an application by two disgruntled members who want the party’s Eastern Cape candidates list declared unlawful and set aside.

The two members had approached the court to intervene, accusing the party’s provincial executive committee (PEC) of failing to follow party guidelines when finalising its list of candidates.

But the ANC had argued that its list process had followed party guidelines and there were no material irregularities.

ANC members Nkululeko Joziyasi and Masande Mambulu argued that the ANC failed to resolve internal disputes before submitting its list to the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC).

However, the ANC insisted that its internal processes had addressed the grievances.

The court dismissed the application, saying the duo failed to make a case on why the list should be set aside.

ANC spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu said the two members failed to prove that the whole process was undermined by the party.

The ANC said the ruling also affirmed the importance of complying with electoral deadlines and equal treatment for all parties.
