Political party discussions on coalitions will start from Saturday as the Democratic Alliance's (DA) Federal Executive (FedEx) meets to consider its options in key municipalities.
The party's FedEx will hold internal discussions on coalitions in hung metros like Buffalo City in the Eastern Cape, where the party got 16% of the vote and could be co-opted into a coalition.
The African National Congress (ANC) in the Eastern Cape has also not ruled out forming coalitions in municipalities where the party failed to get a clear majority.
The ANC's failure to get a clear majority in the Buffalo City metro means the party will now have to go into a coalition with parties like the DA and UDM to form a working government.
In Nelson Mandela bay, the DA improved garnering 44 percent of the vote, meaning the party will be in a better place to choose its own partners to co-govern the metro.
The DA's deputy leader in the Eastern Cape Mlindi Nhanha on
Friday said that the party's FedEx will meet to take stock of the results and consider its options.
“FedEx is meeting. Part of its issues to deal with is obviously these results and how best we should approach coalition talks.”
ANC provincial leader Oscar Mabuyane said that parties will have to be tolerant as they enter an era of coalitions.
“We have said it before that we are in an era of coalitions and we've got to work together and we've got to improve on tolerance.”
Mabuyane said that the ANC wants to build a united country that "Goes beyond the "Parameters of race" as they enter coalition discussions.
