Patriotic Alliance (PA) deputy leader Kenny Kunene believes he performed well during his tenure as Johannesburg’s transport MMC.
With 69% of voting districts counted in the city, the PA is currently trailing on the election results board, with just 1% of the vote.
In the 2021 local government elections, the party garnered almost 3% of the vote, securing eight seats in the Johannesburg City Council.
Following coalition negotiations with the ANC and the EFF, Kunene was appointed as the city’s transport MMC.
The PA has lost Ward 17 and Ward 18 in Johannesburg, which include parts of Eldorado Park, to its political rival, the Democratic Alliance.
It took control of these wards from the DA in 2021, but the DA has now reclaimed them following this year’s elections.
PA leader Gayton McKenzie said the people of Johannesburg have spoken, and his party will respect their decision.
"How we are going to approach coalition, we don't like the DA, and I actually despise them. But we will work with them because it's not about me."
Despite ongoing concerns about potholes and faulty traffic lights, Kunene says he believes he has done a good job.
"Potholes are a symptom of a bigger problem. President Ramaphosa mentioned when he was in the city of Johannesburg in 2025 that I called him in 2023 and highlighted the collapse of infrastructure in Johannesburg."
He believes the party will climb up the leaderboard as more verified results continue to come in.
