The promotions are seen as a fun way for brands to recognise voters and raise awareness about the importance of voting.

South Africans who have cast their ballots in the 2026 Local Government elections can enjoy a few election-day freebies, with several businesses offering treats and discounts to voters who show their inked thumbs.
"It is kind of fun, and I always think it is quite a cute thing that the brands do," said Barbara Friedman of Primedia Plus.
The promotions include:
Original glazed doughnut from Krispy Kreme
A short cappuccino or short hot chocolate at Wimpy
A soft-serve ice cream from Spur (with every main meal ordered)
An ice-cold 300ml Castle Lite at Tiger's Milk
One of the more creative offers comes from Sorbet, which is giving customers 10% off manicures under its campaign line: "Pay for 9 fingers, your voting thumb is free".
The promotions offer voters an opportunity to enjoy a small reward after exercising their democratic right.
