A motorist arrested for drunk driving in Greytown has told traffic officers that he turned to alcohol after his political party lost the local government elections.

The KwaZulu-Natal Transport Department said that the motorist broke down in tears when confronted by officers during the #Nenzanilaezweni road safety operation.

The man allegedly pleaded with officers not to single him out, claiming that other motorists were also drinking, some celebrating their political parties' victories, while others were drowning their sorrows following electoral defeats.

The incident comes as authorities intensify their crackdown on drunk driving ahead of the festive season.

Department spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya said, "More than seven thousand motorists have been arrested for drunk driving since the launch of the operation."
