The Electoral Commission has fired one of its presiding officers after they were seen loading sensitive election material into an African National Congress (ANC)-branded car.

The incident took place on Monday at one of the voting stations in Hammarsdale, KwaZulu-Natal.

This was revealed during a media briefing held by the KZN IEC in Durban on Tuesday.

The Electoral Commission said sensitive election material like ballot papers, security stamps, ink, and the voters' roll do not stay overnight at a voting station.

It said sometimes presiding officers are entrusted with transporting these sensitive materials at the end of the day.

KwaZulu-Natal’s electoral officer, Ntombifuthi Masinga, said this was the case with the Hammarsdale presiding officer.

The IEC said it has fired the presiding officer and will not be taking the situation any further.
