The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) said it is making good progress with the counting of votes, with about 11,000 of the expected 66,000 individual results finalised.

So far, 18% of voting districts had been completed at the time of the briefing, with the commission expecting more results as counting continues.

IEC chairperson Mosotho Moepya has commended election officials, describing the election as largely trouble-free.

Despite operational challenges, including the theft of a security stamp and unmarked ballots in KwaZulu-Natal and the last-minute dash to print election material, leaving 40 wards in Cape Town not fully ready on Monday, Moepya said the overall performance of election officials deserves recognition.

"We deal with human beings, not AI, not robots. There are always going to be issues."

He said the priority now is ensuring that all votes are accurately counted and results verified.

Moepya said the counting is still in the early stages.

The IEC is expected to provide the latest update at 10 o’clock on Thursday morning.
