The Electoral Commission (IEC) said that part of the delays in the counting of votes in eThekwini has been due to recounts.
Results for KwaZulu-Natal’s only metro have been slow, with about 50% of the votes counted by 2 pm today.
uMkhonto Wesizwe Party is leading the race with 17 wards already won in the municipality.
Speaking during a media briefing at the results operations centre in Durban this afternoon, KZN’s electoral officer, Ntombfuthi Masinga, said ballots from some voting stations in eThekwini had to be recounted.
“Reason being there has to be a reconciliation that has to be done on the results slip which reflects the total number of ballots that were issued on the first day on Monday, up to the last day; the spoiled ballots, the invalid ballots and the valid ballots. So all the different categories of valid ballot papers need to add up to the initial number of the ballot books that were issued in that municipality.”
