The African National Congress (ANC) in KwaZulu-Natal said it respects the decision of voters not to bring it back in many municipalities across the province.
With more than 87% of all votes counted in KZN, the ANC is headed for a massive electoral defeat.
The party has already lost several municipalities it previously governed to the uMkhonto we Sizwe Party.
So far, the Greater Kokstad Municipality remains the only council where the ANC is guaranteed a majority of seats.
"We take note of the voters deciding to vote against us in some of the municipalities in KZN. We think there is a message there we need to take to heart but we also see it as a maturing of democracy that people know if we have not performed, they can vote for a different party," said the party’s provincial spokesperson, Sifiso Sonjica.
