LGE 2026: ActionSA wins Robben Island voting district in unexpected LGE result
The Green Machine has registered an electoral victory on the former prison colony of Robben Island.
ActionSA has won the voting district that forms part of the greater Atlantic Seaboard Ward 54, which includes Green Point, Sea Point and Fresnaye.
The party’s Cape Town mayoral candidate Dereleen James said the win comes as a complete surprise with the party’s ward candidate having only made one visit to the island to campaign.
48 voters cast their ballots on Robben Island, with 11 of them going to ActionSA.
In 2021, the majority of the islanders voted for the EFF, and in 2016 the ANC.
Although the win does not translate into a council seat with the greater Ward 54 still to be finalised, James says it’s been a welcome acknowledgement.
"The fact that we weren’t really there, we didn’t campaign there, we literally did a quick pop in and out, to get that outcome, that speaks volumes."
The ANC received nine votes from the island, the EFF and MK 5 each, the DA and PA 4 apiece, African Transformation Movement 3, FF Plus and UDF 2 each, SACP, IFP, and Al Jama-ah 1 each.
