As coalition negotiations loom, following the local government elections, the Democratic Alliance (DA) said it will not take a one-size-fits-all approach to power-sharing arrangements.

The party's Geordin Hill-Lewis said negotiations will be guided by the specific needs of each municipality.

Hill-Lewis was speaking to the media at the Results Operation Centre in Midrand.

He said the party will approach coalition formations on a case-by-case basis, with the needs of individual municipalities guiding its decisions.

Hill-Lewis said the party recognises that there are different forms of coalition arrangements and that there is no one-size-fits-all approach.

“I think that there are still an enormous amount of details to work out in the next coming two weeks on a case-by-case basis and also a national model will be considered as well that covers all councils. So, it’s premature for me to commit to any one of those models now. They are very seriously under discussions and considerations.”

He said the DA will prioritise basic service delivery and the needs of residents over the pursuit of mayoral positions.

Hill-Lewis said the party's focus will be on ensuring that any coalition it enters into can provide stable governance and deliver tangible improvements in communities.
