While voters have been turning out at some polling stations, the picture in Bronkhorstspruit has been quite different.
Voting stations here have been largely quiet, with very few people making their way to cast their ballots.
In Zithobeni, residents were seen queuing to collect water just across the road from an almost empty polling station.
This comes amid growing frustration over service delivery, with some residents questioning whether their votes will bring about meaningful change.
At Laerskool Du Preez Van Wyk, there was little activity at the voting station.
The same scene is happening at Ezithobeni Community Hall, where the voting station is also largely empty.
Interestingly, just across the road, residents are queuing to fill up water containers - a striking contrast to the lack of activity at the polling station.
The scene speaks to some of the service delivery challenges that have featured prominently in engagements with residents in the area.
Some residents expressed disillusionment with the electoral process and questioned whether their votes will translate into meaningful change.
For some, the immediate priority appears to be access to basic services, including water, rather than participating in Wednesday's elections.
While it is still early to draw conclusions about overall voter turnout, the scenes at these two voting stations raise questions about voter participation and public confidence in local government.
