Major political parties battling for the financial hub of KwaZulu-Natal, eThekwini, may soon enter coalition talks.
This is as ANC and DA votes are being overtaken by first-time local government election participant, the uMkhonto weSizwe party.
The council is already governed by a coalition led by the ANC with smaller parties that joined together in 2021 to oust the DA and push it to the opposition benches.
On Friday, leaders for both the MKP and DA said that they would seek alliances to gain an outright majority of the city, where service delivery is declining.
UKZN political analyst Dr Jabulani Nyawo said that this should be top of mind for politicians considering their next council partners.
"At this stage, it's quite important that when these parties engage in a coalition government, they have to make sure that, really this time, they prioritise the ordinary citizens.
Because we keep seeing this thing whereby the political parties will see what it is that they would benefit when they engage or participate in a coalition government. I think for now we have to really, really move away from that notion."
