The uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party has taken an early lead in KwaZulu-Natal municipalities.

As of 9 am on Thursday, with only 12% of the votes counted in the province, the MK Party has already won eleven ward seats.

This is the party’s first time contesting local government elections.

The early signs are showing a strong debut for the MK Party.

However, this was largely expected, as the party also dominated KZN in the 2024 national and provincial elections, receiving the most votes in the province.

The party’s provincial spokesperson, Mkhuseli Mlengane, said they have carried that momentum to this year’s local government elections.

“I think our people are tired; they are yearning for a change. They want a political party that speaks to their needs. I think the MK Party resonates with them on that basis.”

A lot of the results coming through at this point are from smaller, rural municipalities in KZN, with no results posted yet for the province’s only metro, eThekwini.
