The uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party will be governing at least two municipalities outright in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) that were previously under the African National Congress (ANC)’s control.

The latest results from the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC)’s dashboard show the MK Party has won a majority in Richmond and Impendle municipalities.

With the results still trickling in, indications are that the MK Party is set for a strong debut in its maiden local government elections showing.

Just like it did in 2024, the MK Party has disrupted the established political order in KZN.

The Richmond and Impendle municipalities were governed outright by the ANC before falling into the MK Party’s hands this time around.

The party’s provincial spokesperson, Mkhuseli Mlengane, said the people of KZN want change.

“But wait, you will find out that we have also taken a couple from Inkatha Freedom Party. Umkhonto weSizwe is continuing where it left off in 2024.”

Meanwhile, the ANC’s KZN convenor, Mike Mabuyakhulu, said it’s still too early to analyse the party’s performance.

“The most important caveat is that an election is about the people’s will and whatever the people would have decided, that is what we, those who were contesting the election, would have to live with and accept it as the reflection of what the electorate has decided.”

The IEC’s final results will officially be declared on Sunday.
