Premier Soccer League (PSL) chairman Dr Irvin Khoza has urged football supporters across the country to participate in the 2026 Local Government Elections, calling on citizens to exercise their democratic right to vote.

Khoza was speaking on Monday during a visit by President Cyril Ramaphosa, who paid tribute to the PSL chairman and acknowledged the achievements of the league under his leadership.

The engagement also highlighted the importance of football in bringing communities together and the role of local government in developing sporting infrastructure.

The PSL had initially scheduled seven Betway Premiership fixtures for Wednesday, 4 November. However, the league subsequently postponed the matches to allow stakeholders across all 32 clubs an opportunity to participate in the elections.

Khoza encouraged supporters, clubs and football administrators to turn out in large numbers, regardless of their political affiliations.

Dr Irvin Khoza, PSL Chairman, said, “It’s an honour to have the President of the country coming to brief us as serious stakeholders in South Africa.

It’s emotional because we are saying to our people all over the country, it’s very important for you to vote because you cannot come and ask for facilities to be upgraded when you don’t make it a point to make a statement through voting.

If you vote in numbers, it gives voting credibility. A democracy that was well fought for is maintained by people who appreciate the gesture of having the right to vote.

So I’m going to be the first one in the morning on Wednesday in Diepkloof, where I vote, to go and tick my box.

All the supporters of football, all the clubs of the PSL, all the 32 clubs, we are asking you and the supporters to go and vote in numbers. It will be most appreciated and make this a successful and exciting election.”

Khoza’s message was a call for greater civic participation, highlighting the connection between local government, community development and the provision of sporting facilities.

The PSL's decision to postpone its fixtures means football supporters and club stakeholders can participate in the elections before league action resumes.
