A lack of trust in political leadership and unfulfilled election promises seems to be keeping some Bronkhorstspruit residents away from the ballot box.

Residents on the ground say they haven't even registered to vote because they no longer believe the commitments political parties make, especially ahead of elections.

Residents said they have heard promises about better service delivery, job creation and improved living conditions before but have seen little change in their daily lives.

For some elderly women, the priority is even more immediate.

They said that they would rather spend Election Day accessing their SASSA grants than go to the polls, reflecting the financial pressures and disillusionment that are shaping some residents' attitudes towards the electoral process.

This sentiment comes as Bronkhorstspruit continues to grapple with basic service delivery challenges, including a water contamination crisis that has left residents questioning the municipality's ability to provide safe drinking water.

As voters head to the polls, the question is whether political parties have done enough to rebuild public trust and whether those who feel left behind still believe their vote can make a difference.
