Ahead of Wednesday's local government elections, the Western Cape's electoral chief says the IEC is ready.

Michael Hendrickse said teams are working hard to ensure that voting stations are prepared and materials are in place.

In light of deadly gang conflict and taxi violence in parts of Cape Town, Hendrickse said safety has been taken into consideration

"We are working closely with our security partners, including the South African police services, to support a safe environment for both the voters and election officials, and also to secure our venues"

Hendrickse adds that registered voters should bring along either a green ID book or an ID card, and vote at the station where they are registered.

"We want to remind our voters to please bring along their green bar-coded ID book, or a small or a smart ID card, or then a valid temporary identity certificate, and to make sure that they vote at their station where they are registered."
